Most deodorants contain an array of nasty chemicals. They have everything from preservatives to fragrances. Some of them even contain aluminum. As some of you may know, that is really bad! I have been making my own deodorant for over a year. This recipe is easy to make and use and it is free of toxic chemicals!
You will need:
- Baking Soda
- Arrow Root Powder (or Corn Starch)
- Coconut Oil
- Jar w/lid(old baby food jar will work)
- Essential Oil (optional)
Add equal parts of baking soda and arrow root powder. One tbsp of each will work for a small batch. Then add the coconut oil slowly while stirring. Make sure that all the powder is absorbed. You may need to add more in the winter months depending on the temperature of the coconut oil. You can heat up the coconut oil a bit before adding it. It melts at 76° F, so you wont need to heat it up much. At this point you can add any essential oil. I like to add Tea Tree or Lavender. You apply it with your fingers.
Why these ingredients?
Coconut oil- full of vitamins and antioxidants, it is great for even the most sensitive skin and is easily absorbed.
Baking Soda- It is a natural deodorizer. It neutralizes odor and absorbs moisture.
Arrow Root Powder- a thickener and also moisture absorbing.
Essential Oil- not only do they add scent but most of them are antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal. How to choose the right coconut oil?
Don’t skimp out on the coconut oil! It is so good for your skin and body. The best oil will be: “Extra Virgin”, “Unrefined”, “Organic” and “Cold Pressed”. When it’s cold it will be a white, solid and when it’s warm it will be a clear, liquid. It will smell strongly of coconuts. There are a lot of cheap oils out there that contain deodorizers, are bleached and have added chemicals (like hexane). So, watch out what brand you buy. I recommend Nutiva. That is what I use. Coconut oil has so many uses so get a big jar! I love using it with my veggies as well as on my baby’s bum. 🙂
I hope this recipe works for you as well as it works for my family and I!
