Ditch the canned cranberry sauce this year and try this creamy flavorful recipe. When I grew up my mom used to make homemade cranberry sauce with her mother’s recipe. When I got married and had dinner with my husbands family, I experience the canned stuff for the first time. It was loaded with sugar and tasted like candy. I wondered to myself how it wasn’t considered dessert!

We need to remember why it is we eat cranberries. Cranberries are full of vitamin C, flavonoids (powerful antioxidants) and other phytonutrients. Not only are they great for preventing urinary tract infections and gum disease, scientific research shows that they may help protect against heart disease and even cancer. So, avoid the over processed stuff and get some fresh cranberries. This recipes is really easy, I promise!

The other ingredients in this recipes are wonderfully healing as well. The horseradish is not as strong as you may think. It goes perfectly with the tartness of the cranberries. Horseradish is also used for urinary support along with respiratory infections.

Cinnamon has been used for many years in Chinese and Ayurveda medicine. It is great for colds, the flu, indigestion, cramps, headaches, memory and so much more. At one point it was considered more valuable than gold!

I came across this recipe a few years ago and I am hooked! All these wonderful ingredients combined create this amazing sauce that will make your taste buds tingle.

Tip: If you don’t see horseradish root at your local grocery store, see if they can order it for you. If not, then you can get it already prepared.

Here is what you will need:

  • 12oz package of fresh cranberries (about 3 cups)
  • 1/4 cup of freshly grated horseradish
  • 1 orange (zest and juice)
  • 2-4 tbsp. of honey
  • 1/4 cup of sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Start by grating the horseradish with a cheese grater. Be careful because it is much like an onion and it can irritate your eyes.

Then, zest and juice the orange. I got about 1/4 cup of juice.

Rinse the cranberries and put them in a medium sauce pan. Add the horseradish, orange zest and orange juice. Make sure there is enough juice to cover the bottom of the pan.

Turn the heat to medium and cook it down until the cranberries begin to pop. I cooked mine about 5 mins.
Remove it from the heat and add the rest of the ingredients (honey, sour cream and cinnamon).
