GMO’s or Genetically Modified Organisms are plants or animals made by genetically altering their DNA. Scientists merge DNA from one species (with a desirable trait) to another completely different species. This creates an unstable plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes. This is not natural and could never happen in nature or with crossbreeding.
According to the USDA, in 2009, these percentages of foods were genetically modified:
- 93% of soy
- 93% of cotton
- 86% of corn
- 90% of canola
There are also GM varieties of sugar beets, squash and Hawaiian Papaya. It is estimated that 80% of packaged foods in the grocery store contain GMO’s. With no regulation or labeling requirements, bio-engineers are creating hundreds of new dangerous combinations. You can now find GM salmon, wheat, alfalfa, golden rice, yeast, tomatoes, potatoes…the list goes on.
Are GMO’s safe?
The short answer is “NO.” Here is why. Nearly 50 developed countries around the world have banned the production and sale of GMO’s. In the US, the government approved them! ::Shakes head:: The studies are being done by the same corporations that are making a fortune from them…Monsanto being the largest. Monsanto isn’t even an agriculture or food group. They are a chemical company!
The results of genetic engineering are unpredictable. When consumed, GMO’s have been found to cause digestion problems, autoimmune responses, gluten-intolerance, allergies, neurological diseases and even cancer. Animals have become seriously ill and/or died from eating GE foods. Some GMO’s are made to resist pesticides. That means the farmer can spray the whole field of crops and it will only kill off the weeds.
As you can see, this isn’t just a problem for our health. It is detrimental to our planet. Farmers are using more chemicals to grow and they aren’t getting more yield like scientists claimed they would. GM crops destroy the soil and the seeds are easily spread from one field to another. Large corporations have patented the seed so the farmer must purchase the seed year after year instead of saving their own. When a farmers field is contaminated, whether intentional or not, the large corporations sue them and most of the time they are shut down. It’s sad that small family owned farms are slowly disappearing.
How to avoid GMO’s
Currently the only way to avoid GMO’s is to eat organic. The problem is that’s not realistic for most of us. Here are some of the foods you SHOULD buy organic. Labeling of GMO’s in the future will be our best bet to keeping them out of our diet. Vote YES for the Right To Know!
