Watch Out For These Spooky Ingredients in Halloween Candy

Kids in costumes aren’t the only scary thing lurking around on Halloween. It turns out that most candy and chocolate on the shelves are made with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s). We all want our children to experience the fun and stay healthy at the same time. But it can be tough during the holiday season. So, choose non-GMO candy for your little ones this year by looking out for these ingredients.

GMO Candy Corn

One of the scariest and most widely used sweeteners – aspartame – is brought to you by Monsanto, which uses genetically modified bacteria to produce this diabolical “treat.” Aspartame is found in many popular candy and chewing gum brands, especially those that say “sugar free.”

Also lurking in popular Halloween treats? Beet sugar from genetically modified beets, soy lecithin from genetically modified soy (especially in chocolate), corn syrup from genetically modified corn and more! Here is the complete list:

  1. Sugar (GMO sugar beets)
  2. High fructose corn syrup (GMO corn)
  3. Corn starch (GMO corn)
  4. Soy lecithin (GMO soy)
  5. Soybean oil (GMO soy)
  6. Modified food starch (GMO corn)
  7. Fructose, dextrose, glucose (GMO corn)
  8. Cottonseed oil (GMO cotton)
  9. Canola oil (GMO canola)
  10. “Other” ingredients: isolates, isoflavones, food starch, vegetable oil

Is it any wonder that Nestle, Hershey’s and Mars have donated millions to No on the Prop 37 campaign?

We need your help to drive a stake through the NO campaign’s fiendish lies! If Prop 37 passes, it will be easy to find Halloween candy that doesn’t contain genetically modified ingredients. In the meantime, look for those ingredients and stick with organic.

Can’t afford organic?

Cut down on the candy. You can have plenty of fun on Halloween without candy. If your kids still want to go trick-or-treating, here is an idea:

Feed the Pumpkin

After your kids bring home bags of candy have them feed it to the pumpkin (a carved or plastic one will work well). That night replace the candy with a toy or another another non-sugary treat. I plan to replace ours with some organic suckers from Yummy Earth and Kids Z-Bars. YUM! That way you won’t miss out on the fun and in the morning your kids will have something much better!
