usdaorganicAlthough I believe it’s best to purchase organic whenever it’s available, that’s not always an option. Organic food can be expensive. So, if you are tight on money keep this list with you of food that you should buy organic.

These produce have been found to have the most pesticide residue. Definitely buy these organic or alternate organic and non-organic. That way you are not constantly consuming the same pesticides. Dirty Dozen

  • Apples
  • Celery
  • Sweet Bell Pepper

Eating organic not only protects you from ingesting pesticides it’s also currently the only way to know if a food is free from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s). Hopefully that will change soon with Proposition 37. For now, watch out for these common foods that are very likely to be Genetically Modified.

GMO

  • Corn
  • Soy
  • Wheat
These are my top three because they are so prevalent. Corn and soy are used in almost every processed food product. Wheat is consumed a lot. I didn’t realize it until I started eating gluten free. Oh, the baked goods! It is best to cook all your food from scratch. If you buy pre-packaged food then read the labels. I now make all my baked goods from scratch. They are healthier and take more time so I eat less of them!

These ingredients usually contain soy: texturized vegetable protein, carob, emulsifiers, natural flavors, shoyu, soy beverages, soy flour, soy lecithin, soy miso, soy protein concentrate or isolate, soy sauce, soybean oil, stabilizer, bulking agents, tamari, tempeh, vegetable broth, guar gum, and vegetable gum.
